Countdown to Transformation

Leave us go back to elementary phys-ed class in school.Remember the kid who, in dramatic fashion, figured out ways to avoid the physical and the education portion of the intended activities? He or she might have come up with all sorts of interesting rationales each day, like using a metal nail file to slice a thin dermis layer and coating it with Mercurochrome (or Merthiolate) so as to be placed on the injured list as a benched member of the team. Don’t look at me like that.Ah, only if we had Smell-O-Vision! I can imagine the scent, even after all this time. Photo courtesy treasurenet.comOkay, that kid was me. I hated gym class. Throughout life, I went to great lengths to get out of sweating, changing gear, and all the other alleged healthy activity. However, I did join Curves for about three minutes. Got bored going around the circuit. I bought a treadmill but since the house is small, it’s in an area where I had to walk alone. Guess what? Got bored. Anyone close by and interested in buying a (slightly in need of a good cleaning) used treadmill? Message me.If you’ve wandered about the Cave for any length of time, you may remember my journey to better health from a bit over a year ago. I took off about 27 pounds and have kept most of it off. Yay, me! However, I live a very sedentary lifestyle. I work on a computer 29 hours a day, 10 days a week. When I’m not doing that, I’m working on a computer to type stories. Or sitting somewhere and writing stories. Or sitting somewhere watching anime. Exercise consists of vacuuming, juggling empty monster-food cans to the recycle bin, and seat dancing in the car whilst driving. Beyond that, not so much.Until now.I decided to take drastic measures. No, before you start panicking, I’m not having surgery or starting a four-calorie-a-day diet plan. I start at a gym on Monday. It’s a six-week challenge and if you follow me on Facebook, you might have noticed my profile photo has changed. I went on Friday and had my initial weight and photos (!) recorded. I attended a nutrition seminar today and dashed to the market to buy the first batch of indicated food items that will be my sustenance. The weird part is, I’m excited about it. Mentally and psychologically, I know I’ll be hurting and will sweat. I’ll detox for a while from things like my seeded rye (oh, and chocolate). The folks who work and train there are a happy lot and it’s not just because they were faced with a room full of new recruits. I’ve worked around people who love what they do and this is what they look like. I love what I do for a living and when I look in the mirror, I see the same zeal in my eyes that I see in theirs. That’s the genuine, full disclosure, true dope.So the journey begins in two days. I’ll be posting on Facebook but it might not be in a space that all my connections can see. I might try posting once a week here to annoy you all with my stories so you can keep me accountable.Get ready for next Friday or Saturday — it’s sure to be a blast!

  1. I wish I could join you. My cardiologist and personal physician are starting to make rumbles about “surgery.” Like you, I’m sitting at a computer 29 hours a day 10 days a week. To make it even worse, I’m sitting in a recliner all day because the arthritis in my knees is so bad, I can’t sit at a desk for anymore than 10 minutes without seizing up.

    1. Yes! I am starting to have upper back and neck pain, headaches, and my feet and knees are the worst. I talked to one of the trainers and he said they work with each person. They push, but accommodate as well. I am very excited to see what we can do together. Weird 😀
